What is an AGP port?

An AGP port or slot stands for Advanced Graphics Port.  It is a local bus found on many motherboards.  It is used to connect high performing video adapters or video cards.

The AGP port is the point on the motherboard where and AGP video card slides into.  Top video games require the use of an AGP graphics card to assist in the acceleration of 3D computer graphics.  AGP ports are used to generate video images based on graphic generator programs.  Many computer games require the use of an AGP graphics card.  These graphics cards have their own separate processors for decoding and generating video.  These high end video cards are able to create high resolution graphic images at a much faster rate than the on-board graphic chips which rely on the motherboards CPU to process the graphics output.

But as is true in the computer world, technologies never sleeps.  Newer motherboards are now also including PCI Express slots.  (in addition to having an AGP port)  PCI Express is the next generation BIG DOG graphics port that have faster processors and can generate even higher resolution graphic images.
