What is ADSL?

ADSL consists of a transceiver, which is located at the customer's location.  And a DSLAM which is located with the DSL service provider.  The DSLAM is what receives connections from the customer.  Residential customers have a DSL modem or DSL transceiver.  Regardless of what it's called, the transceiver is where data from the user's computer or network is connected to the DSL line. 

The DSL modem is connected to the user's computer using a 10BaseT Ethernet connection.  Or more recently, using USB - Universal Serial Bus connection.  ISP's and telephone companies sell ADSL transceivers to residential customers.  Whereas business customers may use network routers, switches, and other network equipment in one unit to handle multiple users.
