In Computing, What is an Applet?

An applet (the popular short version is "app") is a small program that is intended not to be run on its own, but rather to be embedded inside another application.  Unlike an application, applets cannot run directly from the operating system.  Applets are are written to perform very small sets of tasks.  Applets are not written as full-featured application programs.

In most cases, applets are written to run within larger host applications.  Through a plugin, or other applications like mobile devices that are able to support applet programming.  Web browsers, which often use Java virtual machines, can use applets from Web servers.  Since applets are cross platform compatible, and highly secure (don't have access to user hard drives), they are perfect for small internet applications accessible with a browser.
