API stands for Application Programming Interface.  Many of these applications are used for security access purposes.  Many times developers make a program asking for certain information in order for you to get by a "gate keeper".  This is accomplished by one program asking another program to accomplish certain tasks using an API.  Most applications depend on APIs of an operating system to perform many basic tasks.  An API is said to grant access or to open an application. 

Building an application with no APIs is basically like building a house with no windows and doors.  The API in the computer world is how you open the windows and doors to exchange information.
